Inspired by His Friends, Aaron Pursues an Education in Thailand

Aaron was separated from his parents when he was 8 months old.

His aunt took him in but struggled to provide. Sometimes, she would travel across the border from Cambodia to Thailand in search of work, leaving Aaron alone for days.

During this time, Aaron had no desire to attend school or spend time studying. Without an adult present to encourage him in his studies, he stopped attending school altogether.

But then, Aaron’s aunt learned there was a way she could help her nephew.

She learned that our team in Thailand provides children of migrant workers with a safe place to live while helping them receive a quality education. Seeking to provide Aaron with the very best support she could, she decided to bring him there.

At Lifesong, we stand by a 4-part pledge to the children we serve. The third part of the pledge affirms our commitment to providing quality education to orphaned and vulnerable children to provide a foundation for their future.

At first, Aaron found it difficult to adapt to a more structured way of life with adult supervision and a busy schedule. But as he formed new friendships, he was inspired by the way other children were taking advantage of opportunities to learn valuable concepts and skills in their classes. Some of his older friends were even attending GED-equivalent classes at schools outside of the mission. He saw how confident they were and realized his own lack of self-esteem.

It was then that Aaron decided he wanted to start applying himself to his studies.

To attend a formal school outside of the mission, like many other students, Aaron was required to complete the arduous process of obtaining proper legal documentation and a passport, since he was a citizen of Cambodia, not Thailand. Thankfully, our team was dedicated to working alongside Aaron’s aunt who was willing to do whatever it took to support Aaron’s education.

Now, at 14 years old, Aaron is thrilled to be a part of a GED program that will enable him to receive the equivalent of a high school diploma while living in Thailand. He is excited to pursue his love of languages and one day hopes to become a professional translator.
